With jump racing taking a near two-week summer break, we only have a couple of runners on the Flat this week, with Engles Rock taking her chance at Musselburgh this afternoon and Ballyare following suit at Ayr tomorrow evening.
Engles Rock’s season has been rather up and down to this point, but if she reproduces the form of her second-place finishes at both Doncaster and Ayr, she would be in with every chance in this five-runner field. The step up in trip is a question mark as she isn’t bred to stay, but if she relaxes early her tactical speed could be an advantage in the closing stages.
Ballyare has been admirably consistent during a prolonged spell of racing and is expected to give another good account of himself on his return to Ayr tomorrow. Fourth over course and distance last month, he is now back down to his last winning mark and we are aiming to aid his cause yet further with Harry Russell’s (no relation!) 3 lb claim. The forecast rain will be in his favour, and provided he gets some cover from stall 1, he should run a big race.
